'Tips from former smokers' campaign may have led 100,000 to quit smoking

September 10, 2013

It's called "tips from former smokers."

TV commercials, along with radio, print and other media ads show off real-life former smokers in gritty, if not shocking, ways with their health problems on graphic display.

It was the first federally-funded national anti-smoking media campaign and cost $54 million.

Cigarettes cause nearly 5 million preventable deaths worldwide each year.
