Rashaad L. Byrd held after boy, 7, allegedly brings loaded gun to Elgin school

A Romeoville man has been charged with weapons violations after police were called to a northwest suburban school Thursday morning after a loaded handgun was allegedly spotted inside a student's backpack.

A Romeoville man is behind bars, charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Rashaad Byrd was arrested after a seven-year-old found Byrd's gun and brought it to school in Elgin.

Another student saw the gun in the boy's backpack and told a teacher.

Byrd was apparently staying with the child's family.

Byrd also faces charges of not having a firearm owner's identification card, and for misdemeanor child endangerment.
