'Mayday' call at Little Village fire; CFD rescues 3 of its own firefighters

February 4, 2014 (CHICAGO)

The fire crews arriving at the home in the 3000-block of South Drake found two small children and adult already outside. They were suffering from smoke inhalation, and are expected to be OK.

Firefighters went in the building only to be quickly surrounded by flames. A mayday call went out and the Chicago Fire Department's Rapid Intervention Team responded to the distress signal and helped three firefighters out through a basement window. They were transported to Stroger Hospital for smoke inhalation. All are expected to recover.

A Rapid Intervention Team is called to every fire to assist if any firefighter is injured or trapped during the initial fire.
