James Whitner, 70, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:48 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
The fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at 365 N. Canal in Chicago. Crews said the fire was isolated to one unit of the four-unit building. No one else was injured.
Firefighters say there were non-working smoke detectors in the unit.
