About 8:45 p.m. four officers were executing a search warrant for narcotics at a home in the 2700 block of East 92nd Street when someone from inside the home fired a shot that eventually struck the officer between his eyes, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told reporters late Sunday.
Chicago police officers did not fire any shots, McCarthy added.
The 34-year-old was initially taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital but later transferred to Northwestern where he was in "stable" condition with a fragment of the bullet still lodged in his forehead, McCarthy said late Sunday.
"He's pretty dazed," McCarthy said. "He got hit pretty hard but he's in good shape."
Police said at 3 a.m. Monday that the officer had been released from the hospital.
Police are questioning six people who were inside the home at the time of the shooting, and officers recovered a handgun with one spent round at the scene, McCarthy said.
McCarthy described the officer as "exceptional," adding that he's received more than 200 awards during his time with the Chicago Police Department.
The ambulance carrying the officer arrived at Northwestern Memorial Hospital late Sunday night, ahead of it a procession of Chicago police officers clearing the way for the officer.
Upon arrival and seen through the ambulance window, the officer appeared to be conscious.
McCarthy said the officer's wife and father are also officers. He might need some reconstructive or plastic surgery.
