Bond was set at $40,000 for Johnetta Smith, 24, of the 5800 block of South Wolcott Avenue. She is charged with one felony count of child abandonment. Prosecutors allege Smith picked up her 1-year-old daughter from the babysitter while on ecstasy, and took the baby to her boyfriend's home. Her boyfriend was not home, so prosecutors say she left the child alone.
The girl was found about 11:40 p.m. Friday in an Auburn Gresham building in the 8200 block of South Justine Street, the release said. She was wrapped in a blanket with diapers and a sippy cup next to her.
The baby was taken to a hospital in good condition. She is now in the care of child services. The girl was identified by family and friends who saw her picture on TV.
Smith turned herself into police Monday. The child's godmother said Smith and the infant lived with her, and she believes Smith needs help.
Smith also has an 8-year-old child, who lives with his or her grandmother.
