A memorial service was held Monday for Vernita Gray, one of the two people to be part of Illinois' first same-sex marriage.

She passed away two weeks ago after losing her battle with cancer. She wed her partner Patricia Ewert in November.

The memorial was held at the Goodman Theater.

Governor Pat Quinn says she had a lot of charisma.

She and her wife got married after winning a court battle because of her medical condition.

Gray was 65 years old.
