CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 17-year-old girl was critically injured by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the street in Wicker Park Friday night.
Relatives identified the victim as Nakari Campbell. She was injured just weeks before starting her senior year of high school.
"What if it was your child? What if it was your niece? What if it was your sister? Turn yourself in. Think about those things. Just do the right thing, yeah," said her uncle Anthony Hargrove.
Relatives said Campbell was critically injured around 10:30 p.m. Friday while crossing Division Street at Ashland Avenue. She is now fighting for her life at Stroger Hospital, where she is being treated for serious head and internal injuries.
"This is somebody's daughter. This is somebody's niece. This is somebody's sister. And somebody left her in an intersection to die," said family attorney Cierra Norris.
Chicago police released a surveillance image of the suspect's vehicle, a bright red 2008 Mercedes C350 with Illinois license plate DC20012. Police said the driver fled westbound on Division.
Despite having the vehicle information, CPD said no one is in custody and would not comment further on the investigation. Now Campbell's family is demanding answers.
"If we have the plate, if we're able to track the car, the owner of the car at least should have been in custody and in question by the police because they would have put that kind of pressure on our communities. They would have arrested first and asked questions later, and that is what we are calling them to do," Norris said.
The family said Campbell is in a medically induced coma and has already had multiple surgeries. She still needs more.
Relatives said she was hit and dragged by the vehicle, has serious facial injuries and will need to have her jaw reconstructed.
