CHICAGO (WLS) -- The first snowflakes of the season fell across parts of the Chicago area Monday morning, and more is possible.

Big, fluffy flakes were seen on video shared by an ABC7 viewer in north suburban Lake Zurich. And a wintry mix was reported Monday morning in Homer Glen and Romeoville.

NWS Chicago said it was snowing at O'Hare airport just after 9:20 a.m., as well. This is the earliest first observed snow of the season since Oct. 4, 2014, NWS Chicago said.

The earliest first snow was Sept. 25, 1942, the National Weather Service said.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the potential for challenging travel conditions in Porter and Jasper counties in Indiana until 1 a.m. EST Tuesday.

The Lake County Dept. of Highways, which serves all the unincorporated areas of Lake County, Indiana, turned over some of the trucks in their fleet Monday, attaching the salt spreaders to them and even loading a couple with salt just in case they are needed.

But their belief is unless there is some unexpected lake effect, which is always a possibility on this side of Lake Michigan, whatever comes Monday evening will amount to no more than a dusting.

"This is close to when we start prepping, but this is a little, maybe a week or so in advance," said Ronald Gregory, Dept. Supt. at the Lake County Dept. of Highways said. "We can have anywhere from a dusting to ice. Ice scares us more than anything, so that's why we're loading with some salt right now. We don't actually know, but we have to be prepared."
