CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl were victims of a shooting late Monday on the city's South Side.

Around 11 p.m., the boy was shot in the right leg, and the girl was shot in the left leg in the 5500 block of South Hermitage in the West Englewood neighborhood.

Police say the victims were taken to Comer Children's Hospital in stable condition. The children were on the street playing with fireworks when they were shot, police say.

In photos, 5-year-old Nya Williams and her cousin, 7-year-old CJ Williams, are smiling, happy kids. Now, they are recovering.

Witnesses say a group of men began spraying bullets at families gathering to celebrate the Fourth of July.

"Some guys came out of the alley - started shooting. They took off. My grandkids were out here, my daughter, my son," said Roderick Vasser, CJ's grandfather.

He said CJ has already had surgery on his ankle. Little Nya was also treated and has been released.

"This is how we live. This is how Chicago is. It don't make no sense," said Vasser.

Police say two adults were also shot in the same incident. A 30-year-old woman was shot in the left leg, and a 19-year-old man was also shot in the left leg. Both victims took themselves to University of Chicago Hospital and were listed in good condition.

Police say the shooting appears to be gang related. No one is in custody.

The children are the youngest victims of this weekend's violence, which killed four and injured 62.
