CHICAGO (WLS) -- Thousands of people began Thanksgiving with the annual Turkey Run in Lincoln Park.

It's not only a way to burn off a few calories before the big meal, the event also benefits the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Eyewitness News reporter John Garcia took part. He ran in a turkey suit as his way of helping raise money for the food depository.

Hundreds of people also laced up their sneakers for the 31st annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot on Thursday morning. The 5K race in suburban Elmhurst was created to help raise money and awareness for the hungry across the Chicago area.

Proceeds benefit several organizations, including the west suburban community pantry.

Since the annual race started, more than $2.5 million has been raised to help feed the hungry.
