How to help Illinois tornado victims

CHICAGO (WLS) -- After at least four tornadoes touched down in north central Illinois this week, many are wondering how they can help the victims.

Coal City is welcoming volunteers on Friday, June 26 at 9 a.m. Anyone interested in helping can sign up at the Diamond Banquet Hall at 55 S. Daly in Diamond. Those under 18 will require adult supervision, but no gear is needed. You'll need to sign a waiver, and then you'll be given a work assignment.

An emergency shelter was established at Coal City High School at 650 West Division Street for residents in need. The American Red Cross and United Methodist Church are coordinating efforts to help them.

A hotline (815-518-3047) is available to connect volunteers with affected residents. Volunteers will be welcome once the area is deemed safe.

The Community Foundation of Grundy County's website has further information about how people can help. Mayor Halliday said cash donations will be the best way to assist affected residents.

The Grundy County Community Organizations Active in Disaster Facebook page will also be used to coordinate volunteers and donations.

In a statement, Illinois Senator Mark Kirk also offered to "provide any assistance we can" and thanked emergency responders. Those in need should call his Chicago office at 312 886-3506 or visit ready.illinois.gov or www.illinois.gov/iema.

ComEd is also dispatching community service trucks equipped with cellphone chargers to the hardest hit areas.
