CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

3 men wounded, 2 critically, in Garfield Park shootout: Chicago police

Three men were injured in a West Side shootout early Saturday morning, Chicago police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the Garfield Park neighborhood's 3300-block of West Maypole Avenue just before 12:45 a.m.

Concealed-Carry License holder, burglary suspect get into shootout at Bucktown business: CPD

A Concealed-Carry License holder and a burglary suspect got into a shootout at a Northwest Side business early Friday, Chicago police said.

5 wounded in West Side shooting

Five people were wounded in a shooting Friday morning in the Lawndale neighborhood, Chicago police said.

The shooting took place at about 12:19 a.m. in the 1300-block of South Lawndale Avenue.

Police said a group of people were gathered on the street and sidewalk when a silver car pulled up an began shooting at the crowd, wounding five people.

The victims range in age from 21 to 62.

Person killed in I-94 expressway shooting on South Side, state police say

A person was killed in an expressway shooting Thursday afternoon on Chicago's South Side.

The shooting happened around 5:17 p.m. on Interstate 94 northbound between 79th and 83rd Street in the Chatham neighborhood, Illinois State Police said.

One person was taken to a hospital after the shooting, where they were pronounced dead. Their gender, age and identity were not immediately known. It was not known if anyone else was injured.

The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately known. Illinois State Police continue to investigate.
