Woman shot in Washington Park, Chicago police say
A woman was shot Saturday night at a park on South Ellsworth Drive in Washington Park, Chicago police said.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

3 shot, 1 fatally, in Lawndale, Chicago police say

One person is dead and two more were injured in a shooting in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood Monday afternoon, police said.

The shooting happened near Cermak and Karlov on the West Side.

Police said a 37-year-old man was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.

Two men, aged 34 and 26, were shot and were expected to be okay.

Man shot while getting out of car in Near West Side, police say

A man was shot around 2 a.m. Sunday while he was getting out of his car, according to Chicago police.

The shooting happened in the 2100-block Jackson Boulevard.

The man, 24, was shot in the right arm. He was dropped off at the hospital and is expected to be okay.

No one is in custody. CPD is investigating.

3 shot while standing in South Side park, CPD says

Three people were shot while standing in a park in West Chatham, according to CPD.

The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. in the 8200-block of Princeton Avenue on Sunday.

A man, 45, was shot in the back; a 34-year-old man was shot in the leg and woman, 40, was shot in the right leg.

It's unknown where the shots were fired from.

All victims were taken to the hospital and are expected to be okay, according to CPD.

No one is in custody. CPD is investigating.

Child among 18 shot, 1 fatally in weekend gun violence across city, police say

At least 18 people shot have been shot, 1 fatally, in shootings across Chicago so far this weekend, police said.

A 7-year-old boy was shot on Sunday on the Dan Ryan Expressway, Illinois State Police said.
