CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

4 shot inside Deja Vu Showgirls nightclub in South Loop, police say

Four people were wounded on Monday, police said, which happened around 3:36 a.m. inside the Deja Vu Showgirls club in the 700-block of South Clinton Avenue.

Police said multiple people were involved in a verbal altercation inside the nightclub when someone opened fire, hitting four people.

A 27-year-old man was shot multiple times and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Three other men were shot and taken to the hospital. They are expected to be okay.

By Monday afternoon, Chicago police placed a notice on the front door of the nightclub.

Boy, 13, killed in Edgewater shooting

A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed in a shooting in the Edgewater neighborhood Sunday night.

The shooting took place at about 8:16 p.m. in the 6000-block of North Kenmore Avenue.

Officers responded to a report of a person shot in a residence and found a 13-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the head, police said.

The boy was transported to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead, police said.

2 shot, including teenager, in Pilsen, police say

Two people were shot while walking on the city's Southwest Side, according to Chicago police.

An 18-year-old man and 15-year-old boy were walking when they told police they heard gunshots.

Both are expected to be okay.

Teen shot hours after Bud Billiken Parade, Chicago police say

A teen was seriously injured in a shooting Saturday afternoon after the Bud Billiken Parade on the city's South Side.

The shooting happened after an altercation between the victim and a male offender around 2:15 p.m., about two hours after the parade ended, according to Chicago Police Department officials.

The victim, a 16-year-old boy, was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital, initially reported to be in good condition, police said.
