Illinois delegation see Obamas as among Dems' most effective campaigners
Illinois delegates say the Obamas' continued appeal with independents and moderate Republicans make them perhaps the most effective Democrats to make the case for a Kamala Harris presidency to all-important swing voters.
"Former president Barack Obama is lending his credibility saying, Kamala, I know her. She's going to do a great job. And if you liked me, you're going to love her," said 36th Ward Ald. Gilbert Villegas.
"To have Barack Obama and Michelle Obama from Chicago, the former president and First Lady. There's a generation of folk that don't know Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. It's almost like another passing of the baton," said Illinois House Speaker Rep. Emanuel "Chris" Welch.
Illinois also cast itself as the capital of Midwest progressivism.
"The two major issues, at least for me and what I've been hearing from the other delegates from around the country on the bus, have been women's reproductive rights and gun violence prevention, and Illinois has been a model on both," said Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering.
