Search for missing medical student grows desperate

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The search for a missing medical student is growing more desperate. Ambrose Monye, 28, hasn't been seen in more than a week. His family said that is extremely unusual.

Monye is just four weeks away from graduating with his medical degree. He is a University of Guadalajara student in Chicago for a two-year clinical rotation at Jackson Park Hospital.

Fliers posted around campus say Monye was last seen on April 21, walking toward the university's John Crerar medical library in the 5700-block of South Ellis Avenue.

His brother, Joseph Monye, is also a medical student. He said they hail from just outside Baltimore, Maryland, and their family is horrified by what may have happened to him.

"This is a guy that's graduating in less than four weeks. His ticket is already booked to go for his graduation ceremony. This is very unlike him. We have no idea what could have possibly happened," Joseph Monye said.

Ambrose Monye's classmates said he is quiet and helpful and mainly goes between his apartment in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, the gym and the hospital. They also said he liked to frequent coffee shops in the area.

They started to worry when they didn't hear from him last weekend. They went to his apartment, but found nothing unusual.

"When we went through his apartment, we saw his reading lamp was on. His fan was on. It was hot over the weekend. He had a fridge full of groceries. I think he just went grocery shopping. He has a bunch of books. He usually studies and everything was where he usually keeps them. So we had no reason to think he went anywhere or went away. Definitely he would have told me, because we're pretty close. I've heard nothing from him," Joseph Monye said.

Police will only say they are investigating, with very few clues in this case.

Monye is described as a 5'10", 180-pound black man with black hair, brown eyes and medium complexion, police said.
