Chicago plans to pay $3.1M in settlement with police applicants

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago plans to pay a $3.1 million settlement to end a class-action lawsuit over police hiring rules.

The lawsuit filed Friday involves 47 foreign-born applicants who wanted to join the force before 2011.

They did not meet the department's requirement of living in the U.S. for at least 10 years. The department changed the requirement to five years in 2011, saying it was a minimum time for applicants to establish a behavior and background in the U.S. that can be checked.

The city council's finance committee will vote on the settlement Monday. If approved, the full council will consider the plan Wednesday.
