CHICAGO (WLS) -- Police are looking for the person shot and killed a man who was found dead in a van along northbound I-57 near West 111th Street.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Maurice Johnston, 37, of the 11500-block of South Wentworth Avenue.

Investigators said someone in a moving vehicle fired shots over a significant distance and wounded the victim near West 110th Street and South Hamlet Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Monday before driving away.

The man was able to drive himself onto the expressway, where he lost control of the vehicle and crashed. The van ended up on an embankment along the interstate under a pedestrian bridge.

Darryl Murray, who lives near where the shooting took place, told ABC7 Eyewitness News he heard more than a dozen shots fired. He said he and his neighbors are growing worried over so many stories of shootings on or near Chicago expressways.

"It's maniacal. It's crazy. Why would people even want to be shooting each other, especially on the expressway? It's just crazy," Murray said.

Police shut down northbound I-57 near the scene for the investigation Monday night. All lanes were back open for the Tuesday morning commute.

Investigators are trying to determine what led to the shooting. No one is in custody.
