Charges dropped against man apparently kicked by police in video

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Charges have been dropped against the man at the center of a police video that triggered an investigation into allegations of officer misconduct.

Shaquille O'Neal is back at home with his family and not facing any charges after video surfaced of him apparently being kicked in the head by a Chicago police officer.

"He is battered. He is bruised. He is alive. He is standing here. He is with his family," said Michael Oppenheimer, O'Neal's attorney.

He is also seeing, for the first time, the video of his arrest that is sparking outrage in the community.

"I am happy for Shaquille. He is happy that the charges were dropped," Oppenheimer said.

The officer seen in the video has been stripped of his police powers. Investigators say officers arrested O'Neal Monday after a chase and found three bags of heroin on him. They also say O'Neal but an officer's finger before being handcuffed.

"No matter what led up to these events, no officer that is paid by our tax dollars to protect and serve our community has the right to stomp on his face and knee him as well," said community activists Ja'mal Green.

O'Neal's attorney is calling for a criminal investigation.

"I would hope that it's only the first small step and large steps will be taken to help ensure justice for Shaquille and for the city of Chicago," Oppenheimer said.
