Chicago Weather: Freezing temperatures continue as Chicago gets ready to ring in New Year
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Throughout the day Sunday, people will be migrating downtown to ring in the New Year, but they're also going to be met with a dangerously cold wind chill.
The National Weather Service is expected to issue a Wind Chill Advisory for Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, McHenry Lake, and Will counties in Illinois and Jasper, Lake, La Porte, Newton and Porter counties, beginning at 9 p.m. Wind chills are expected to be between -20 to -30.
A Wind Chill Warning is scheduled to go into effect at 9 p.m. for Boone, DeKalb, La Salle and Livingston counties until noon on Jan. 1, with wind chills ranging from -25 to -35.
The river is almost all iced over and the temperatures are bone chilling once again, but people are bundled up and ready to face another day of the bitter cold.
"It's Chicago. I just came back from Florida," said Vadaim Leyensm. "It's a New Year, so it needs to be cold.
Some people took advantage of the single digit temperatures and spent the day ice skating Saturday, while others helped make care packages for the homeless. For many, this weather is unbearable.
"It's a big problem in the city and any helping hand is a good thing," said Hersh Mosqueda, who was packing supplies for the homeless.
If you are making plans to go out Sunday night, you are not the only one final preparations are underway to get ready for the big party and that includes security across the city. There will be a heavy police presence, especially downtown and at Navy Pier.
The CTA is also offering free rides starting at 10 p.m. Sunday night to 4 a.m. Monday morning.
