Private companies could lease city parking meters

The city is looking at leasing the operation to a private company, just as it did with the Chicago Skyway.

Chicago has almost 35,000 on-street parking spaces and 17 metered parking lots.

Friday, the city asked interested companies to provide information on their qualifications.

There has been no word on exactly how much money the deal would raise.

The lease of the Skyway and four public parking garages to private companies provided the city with more than $2 billion in money up front.
