A 42-year-old Des Plaines man is dead and another person was injured after a car collided with a Metra train in the northwestern suburbs Thursday night. Robert Wells, of 1004 S. River Rd. in Des Plaines, was pronounced at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge at 7:08 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Des Plaines Deputy Fire Chief Scott Small said a car apparently ran into a train at the intersection of Pearson and Miner streets about 6:15 p.m.

Two people were injured, one critically and one seriously. Both were taken to area hospitals, Small said.

Metra Union Pacific Northwest train No. 645 was scheduled to arrive in Barrington at 6:36 p.m. but was stopped in Des Plaines because of a grade crossing accident, according to a Metra service alert at 7:22 p.m.

Des Plaines police remain on the scene, as of 9 p.m.

A Metra spokesperson was not available for comment.
