Diet, exercise can delay diabetes for years

A study reported this week in the journal lancet showed drinking less alcohol, eating more vegetables and exercising can reduce the onset of diabetes by more than 40 percent.

The 20-year study involved more than 570 Chinese adults. At the end of the study, 80 percent of those who changed what they ate and increased exercised had diabetes, compared to 93 percent who made no changes at all.

The findings came as part of a series of studies addressed new research about diabetes, which affects 246 million adults worldwide and accounts for 6 percent of all global deaths.
