Ministers call on parents to supervise kids more closely

A group of ministers and community activists is calling on parents and residents of the Austin neighborhood to help ensure children are able to get to school safely amid what they call a rash of crimes in the area. Last month, a 16-year-old girl was raped near Central and Chicago Avenue. Wednesday morning, just a few blocks away, a man tried to rob a teenage girl as she was waiting for a bus.

The group is calling on parents to supervise their children more closely, as they walk to and from school each day, and for the community to work toward ending violent crimes.

"We're calling now on the community so that we can activate or maybe reactivate some of the programs that we've had in terms of community watch programs and community watch groups," said Pastor Robbie Wilkerson, Leadership Network.

Police are investigating Tuesday morning's incident.
