March the Mart

(News Release) Founders Kate Kennedy, Lindsay Alston, Alex Bergonia and Addie McDonnell, all Chicago area high school students, have joined to create the walk-a-thon, which will be held during Martin Luther King Jr. Day at The Merchandise Mart in Chicago.

The 3-mile walk is an opportunity for youth and adults to provide a service to their community. The walk-a-thon will begin on the 18th floor and wind down stairwells and through the stunning showroom corridors of the famed Merchandise Mart. The walk's registration and starting point is located at The Merchandise Mart Conference Center on the second floor and conclude in the Shops at The Mart Food Court. Walkers may begin their trek any time between 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. All proceeds from the student-organized event will benefit Special Children's Charities, a fundraising arm of Chicago's Special Olympics.

"We had so much fun last year and had such a successful turnout," said Kate Kennedy, March the Mart co-chair. "We exceeded our goals and hope to do the same this year!"

Kennedy's family has a long history with both Special Olympics and The Merchandise Mart. The Mart was owned for some 50 years by the Kennedy Family, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver's name has long been synonymous with Special Olympics. The daughter of Chris and Sheila Kennedy, Kate, along with co-chairs Alex Bergonia, Lindsay Alston and Addie McDonnell, continues a long tradition of supporting persons with developmental disabilities. Chris Kennedy is president of The Merchandise Mart.

Registration and starting point are located at the second floor Food Court at The Merchandise Mart. Please visit marchthemart.com to learn about the event.
