Poll: Families plan fewer vacations

February 23, 2009 American families plan to scale back on spring and summer vacations.

The USA Today/Gallup poll found that 58 percent of people who normally take an annual vacation away from home will shrink their vacation spending this year or just not go away at all.

The poll finds in all, Americans could be spending about $30 billion less on leisure trips this spring and summer.

With that in mind, companies are counting on big deals to lure families who are including vacations in their budgets.

The big theme parks are already offering free stays as part of vacation packages. And travel Web sites are offering bigger discounts for airfare and hotel packages.
