Urban league challenges Ill. school funding

April 16, 2009 (CHICAGO) A judge ruled a lawsuit filed by the organization can go forward.

It argues that the state's school funding system violates the illinois Civil Rights Act and should be heard in court.

"It's not the end of the battle, the end of the road, but it is and important victory because no other lawsuits has made it past with point, education lawsuit," said Cheryle Jackson, Chicago Urban League.

On Wednesday, a judge threw out four counts of the Urban League lawsuit. But he left intact the fifth one alleging that Illinois school funding violates the rights of black and Latino children.
