Plans underway for Midway bypass

August 10, 2009 In Bedford Park, Central Avenue dead ends at a rail yard, but the new bypass would route traffic under that rail yard and eliminate congestion on Cicero and Harlem Avenues.

State and federal money has been set aside, but the $170 million is not enough. More funding will be needed. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood met with Congressman Dan Lipinski and others on Monday at the proposed site to push for the project.

The action now goes to Washington D.C. for final approval under the federal transportation bill.

The cost of the new bypass is estimated between $300 and $500 million.
