NW Side fire kills 1, injures 4

September 30, 2009 (CHICAGO) The fire broke out Wednesday morning in the 3800-block of North Lawndale. By 6 a.m., crews are cleaning up and had boarded up the home.

One man is dead after the fire tore through his home just after midnight. Four people were injured. They were taken to hospitals, but they all suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The fire started at 12:30 a.m. in the first-floor bedroom in the two-flat. Benito Quinones, 93, died on the first floor. Three women and a man were injured on the second floor. All of these people are related and include women ages 62, 66 and 84, and a 65-year-old man.

A dog was also saved, but a cat died in the fire.

Firefighters say that a space heater is being looked at as a possible cause, but the official cause is unknown. It's unknown yet if there were smoke detectors in the home.
