Regular hand washing is a critical part of preventing the spread of swine flu, but during the hustle and bustle of your day it can be easy to forget this simple strategy. New research in the American Journal of Public Health finds that some eye-catching reminders in public bathrooms can help people remember to wash up.
For the study, screens in public rest rooms flashed messages such as "is the person next to you washing up?"
The results showed overall, women were better washers, with men cleaning up only half as often. Women responded better to gentle reminders and men were more likely to suds up if the messages made them feel guilty or disgusted.
