December 22, 2009 (CHICAGO) --A federal judge has ordered a new trial for former Chicago Streets and Sanitation commissioner Al Sanchez. Back in the spring, Sanchez was convicted of mail fraud. Prosecutors said he helped reward political campaign workers with city jobs and promotions.
Tuesday, a judge threw out Sanchez's conviction, because prosecutors failed to disclose to defense attorneys that one of their witnesses was a high-ranking gang leader and drug dealer.
Prosecutors have 30 days to appeal the ruling.
