Commissioner of city fleet management suspended

January 9, 2010 (CHICAGO) The punishment comes after the Chicago Sun-Times reported a company his department uses to repair city vehicles was convicted of fraud against the city 29 years ago.

The city says it plans to impose more restrictions on companies it hires or does business with, including more exhaustive searches of a company's track record.

"It is unacceptable. What happens is, and were going through the details...we only go back five years," Mayor Daley said. "There should've been another question about ever defrauding a state local or federal government. That should've been on the form, to be very frank."

Picardi had been commissioner of Streets and Sanitation but was replaced last year, following allegations that he did not oversee crews properly.
