Missing Naperville man shipwrecked but safe

February 15, 2010

Richard McClow, 79, took off from Fort Pierce late Thursday night aboard his single engine, 23-foot boat. He was scheduled to arrive in Marsh Harbour in The Bahamas on Friday, but was reported missing Sunday afternoon when he didn't show.

According to McClow's son, he was picked up by a fisherman on Great Sale Island. Dave McClow said his father made a tactical error, went the wrong direction and ran aground on the remote island. The waves flipped the boat and destroyed it on the rocks, leaving him without a working cell hone. McClow was stranded for four days until he was able to get the attention of the fisherman, who gave him a ride to Freeport.

Two Coast Guard cutters, a cargo plane and a jet took part in the search for McClow.
