Lincoln Park man charged in two attacks

March 8, 2010 (CHICAGO) Police say John Poiner, 47, of the 600-block of West Deming Place, struck two women in separate attacks within a half hour of each other early Saturday evening.

Poiner has been charged with one count each of aggravated battery on the public way, attempted robbery, battery making physical contact and simple assault.

Police say the first incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. in the 1300-block of North Ashland Ave. The 20-year-old victim and her wheelchair-bound mother were approached by Poiner requesting a cigarette and 50 cents after they left a department store, police said. When the victim refused, Poiner allegedly struck victim in the face and fled.

A half hour later in the 1800-block of North Damen Ave. police say, Poiner approached a 40-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman while they were walking down the street. Poiner allegedly struck the woman in the back, causing her to fall to the ground.

Both female victims from each incident were treated and released from area hospitals for their injuries.

Police say Poiner is a career criminal with over 100 arrests.
