Police to drivers: Be aware of motorcyclists

April 28, 2010 (CHICAGO)

Illinois State Police, IDOT and motorcycle safety advocates launched the Start Seeing Motorcycles campaign Wednesday.

May is motorcycle awareness month. The number of motorcycle fatalities in Illinois have decreased from 135 in 2008 to 130 in 2009. But drivers are still being encouraged to be on the lookout for bikers and share the road with them.

"Further emphasis on motorist awareness will continue in 2010. Hundreds of banners like the one behind me will be dispensed in strategic locations through out the state to get the drivers of other vehicles to watch out for motorcycles," said Terry Redman, IDOT.

IDOT is offering free courses for beginning and intermediate riders to reduce motorcycle crashes.
