Cook County Commissioner Forrest Claypool is trying to get on the ballot for Cook County assessor as an independent.

Claypool and a group of volunteers hit the streets Thursday to gather signatures from Cook County residents. He has until Monday to get the required 25,000 signatures for the filing deadline.

Claypool is the former superintendent of the Chicago Park District and at one time was also Mayor Daley's chief-of-staff.
