June 20, 2010 --Our guest on this NewsViews is Karen Lewis, president-elect of the Chicago Teachers Union. She defeated the current two-term president, Marilyn Stewart, in a runoff, and takes office July 1. We'll find out why Lewis ran, why she thinks she won, her agenda as president, and her view of the Board of Education vote that authorized the layoff of 2,700 teachers because the board faces of budget deficit of some half a billion dollars.
Also, does she support having her union members give up contract benefits in order to save some jobs? And how should schools be adequately funded, in her view?
