Two Homewood firefighters were honored Friday for their heroic efforts to rescue an elderly man from his burning home.

Firefighter Karra Kopas and the parents of Brian Carey accepted the Firemark Award for courage presented by an insurance company. Carey was killed and Kopas injured in the rescue attempt last March.

The firefighters were the first on the scene of a fire in a one-story home on Lincoln. They were able to get an 89-year-old woman out of the house but could not save her paralyzed husband.

Carey is the first Homewood firefighter killed in the line of duty.
