Washington state fire burns 3 homes, endangers others

July 19, 2010 (YAKIMA, Wash.) The fire started yesterday afternoon about 10 miles west of the city's downtown.

Blustery winds began to ease somewhat late yesterday, giving firefighters a change to work at gaining some ground on the blaze. But earlier strong gusts blew the fire across a sagebrush-covered ridge toward an area of about 100 homes.

Richard Andring of the state's Department of Natural Resources says three homes and several outbuildings, including small barns and sheds, were destroyed by the flames

Numerous homes were evacuated as firefighters went door-to-door to help residents leave.

Officials say dozens of homes are still threatened.
