Hit-and-run driver strikes 2 in Loop

February 8, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Both victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and are listed in critical condition.

Witnesses say the vehicle was headed south down State Street and went through the intersection, despite having a red light. It hit two women who were in the crosswalk with the green light around 7:30 p.m. It was busy with shoppers and people walking in the area, so there were numerous witnesses.

Police believe they have a partial license plate on the vehicle that hit the women but have not yet released it. They do have surveillance video from a number of cameras in the area as well as witnesses' accounts.

"A girl yelled outside of the door and she said, 'oh, my God, somebody has been hit.' So I looked this way and then I see two people laying in the street," said witness Ike Patrick.

Police believe the vehicle was an SUV, possibly a Mitsubishi. They it was a dark color, possibly green or black. A white female was driving and took off down State.

"The car just took off out of nowhere. Other pedestrians were actually trying to get the car to stop. And then by that time, the car had been all the way down by the next light, Adams and Jackson," said Patrick.

Police have not released the victims' identities.
