IDOT, groups encourage motorcycle safety

March 30, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The Illinois Department of Transportation along with several motorcycle advocacy organizations teamed up for the state's first "Gear Up" campaign. They are encouraging new motorcycle riders to take free training courses and use proper safety equipment.

"Imagine sliding across the pavement at 30 plus miles per hour wearing simply shorts, a tank top and flip flops. It would be like holding your flesh to a belt sander," said Dan Harper, VP, Abate of Illinois, Chicago Chapter.

The groups are urging riders on motorcycles to wear the right gear, including helmets, and to get licensed.
