Flags were presented to the loved ones of Chicago firefighters Corey Ankum and Edward Stringer. Both were killed when the roof of a burning building collapsed last December.

Chicago firefighter Christopher Wheatley was also recognized. He died as the result of a fall while battling a fire in the West Loop.

The name of Homewood firefighter Brian Colin Carey will be added to the memorial. He gave his life trying to rescue two people from a burning home.

Deputy Chief Mark Johnson of Hinsdale collapsed during physical fitness training last September, and Frank William Fouts with the city of Kankakee died last July at his home.

Last year, firefighters from 27 states died in the line of duty. Illinois had the greatest number of fatalities with eight.
