Ford says its new electric car will save owners a lot money.

The automaker says the new five passenger Focus Electric will get the equivalent of 100 miles per gallon.

Ford began production Wednesday on the Focus Electric, which is designed to compete with the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf.

Ford says their model will take about three hours to charge. It will be available next year.
