Ind. judge declares winner in close mayor's race

January 5, 2012 (CONNERSVILLE, Ind.)

The Palladium-Item of Richmond reports that special Judge Eugene A. Stewart on Wednesday declared Connersville's Republican Mayor Leonard Urban the winner of November's election.

The judge has issued an order reversing a recount commission's decision to throw out 220 absentee ballots. That panel's decision had erased Urban's slim lead over Democrat Harold Gordon and made the race a tie.

The final vote count was 1,447 votes for Urban and 1,433 votes for Gordon, giving Urban a 14-vote edge.

Gordon had filed for the recount after he narrowly lost the election. He has 30 days to appeal Stewart's decision, and said Wednesday he hasn't decided about an appeal.
