Gender plays role in how people deal with pain

January 23, 2012

The debate may never end, but one new study finds women may feel pain more intensely than men do, especially when it comes to specific types.

Researchers reviewed electronic medical records from more than 11,000 patients.

In some cases women rated their pain a full point higher than men. The difference was most pronounced for problems such as lower back pain, sinusitis and neck pain.

The explanation may be that women are more apt to report pain or that men may just be more reluctant to admit their pain.

The difference may also be hormonal.

Results are in the Journal of Pain.
