The accident happened near the Portage toll plaza at approximately 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Indiana State Police say the van might have hit an icy patch on the roadway.
According to authorities, a semi-truck pulling a flatbed trailer hit the van broadside in the driver's door.
The van's driver, 26-year-old Pierre Louise DeVaugh Smith of Hammond, Ind., died at the scene.
The semi driver had a minor neck injury.
