2 killed in South Side hit-and-run

February 9, 2012 (CHICAGO)

The driver of the car left the scene, but he was arrested a short time later.

It happened just before 3 a.m. at 95th and Cottage Grove.

Authorities have not released the names of the two people killed.

Investigators said the man and woman were killed as they walked near 95th and Cottage Grove. That's when police say they were struck by a Nissan passenger car. Police say the driver did not stop.

Officers at the scene said the man, who is described as being in his 50s or 60s, and the woman, who is described as being her 40s or 50s, died at the scene.

Investigators said a man believed to be the driver of the vehicle involved was taken into custody about two blocks away in an alley, near 94th and Champlain.

Neighborhood residents were left shocked by the chain of events.

"There's something happening every day, but to hear that one, though--yeah, that's kind of a shock to the neighborhood, because it's pretty quiet here," said neighborhood resident Zebedee Thomas. "There's not a lot of violence."

Authorities said the driver was treated and released from an area hospital before he was taken to Area 2 headquarters. No charges have been filed

It is unclear if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
