The Chicago Department of Transportation has revealed a master plan study conducted with Metra, Amtrak and other organizations concerning major upgrades to Chicago's Union Station.

In the short term, plans involve improving station entrances and the expansion of Amtrak's waiting rooms.

Over the next five to 10 years, commuter platforms will be widened and the Canal Street viaduct will be rebuilt over parts of the station.

In the long term, new tracks and platforms could be added to increase passenger capacity.
