Big baby might mean greater breast cancer risk for mom

July 17, 2012

Researchers already knew having larger babies can mean increased risk of future breast cancer for mothers. Now a study in PLoS ONE may be the most definitive yet.

The new research finds those who delivered babies in the top 20 percent for weight -- at least 8.25 pounds -- were nearly three times more likely to develop breast cancer.

Why? Authors say hormonal changes associated with heavier babies may be responsible for the greater breast cancer risk.
